I think I was best described recently by my girlfriend as a 'self-taught, enthusiastic, workaholic, photo-journalist people photographer'. I don't think I'd argue with that, but I'd probably change 'workaholic' to 'hobbyaholic', if there is such a word!

I grew up in Essex/Hertfordshire in the UK, just North of London, but ironically I only got into photography properly after moving away from pastures green and relocating to the big city for university. I did a bit of travelling along the way, which inspired me initially in the search for great pictures. As with most people, I started off with a tiny film compact and went straight into digital when first I could with a Sony Cybershot 3.2 megapixel compact camera.
I used this camera to take pictures at events for my University and for the student newspaper while working as editor of photography. It's a very expensive hobby, and it was only when I left univerisity and started earning that I could really progess properly. I began to read up on the most appropriate starter kit, which at the time was the Nikon D50. I learnt the ropes with this excellent entry-level camera for around a year, and with the help of an essential subsciption to Photography Monthly magazine started to really enjoy myself. After producing a few worthy images and 'getting my eye in' I felt it only right to produce a website and take a few more steps forward with my hobby. Being my own biggest critic this did take a while!
In 2007 after a little bit of saving and a lot of deep breaths I made the upgrade to the superb D200 Nikon camera and a Nikon 18-70mm f4.5 Lens to accompany my then favoured Tamron 70-300mm f5.6 Lens.
When the jobs kept coming I decided to climb steeper up the photo ladder and get the Nikon D300.

In 2010, with the business growing and growing, I have now replaced all this with some seriously high-spec kit. I now shoot with the professional full-frame Nikon D700 camera, primarily with the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 lens firmly attached! And the D300s, again primarily with the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens. It's a hefty weight on each shoulder, but most definitely a reassuring one. I also have a variety of other great wide-angle, macro and fish-eye lenses to play with, as well as flash-guns, filters and even an excellent studio flash kit (umbrellas and all!)

I've developed my style over the years, and I think it can now be best described as reportage. I love candid shots of people and believe that a nice shot of a person smiling or laughing (not posing for the camera) is better than any landscape. There's nothing more satisfying than watching/hearing people's reactions to my images of them and their friends and family, I love interacting with people of all ages and this has helped with my recent endeavours into the rather daunting yet exciting world of weddings.
My motivation is quite simply my love of taking photos, and if I can please a few people along the way then it makes it a whole lot sweeter.
